Are dry-type transformers suitable for complex load characteristics

Are dry-type transformers suitable for complex load characteristics like renewable energy and data centre applications?

There is typically a high level of non-linear load in renewable energy and data centre applications, which generates significant harmonics. Dry-type power transformers can be designed to withstand these high levels of harmonic and non-linear load – which create additional heat in the equipment. This can also cause leakage currents, which need to be addressed using an electrostatic shield. This is installed between the low voltage (LV) and medium voltage (MV) windings, to deal with any stray earth current that occurs as a result of the non-linear load.

A key aspect in designing the transformer is the use of a special type of resin for the MV winding. This renders the transformer more suitable for changing load conditions. Particularly with renewable energy applications, the transformer varies between being fully loaded and unloaded every day. The specialised resin more effectively accommodates the frequent contraction and expansion of the windings. Flux densities can also be altered in the design to cater for the non-linear load.

From transformers for primary power supply for utility grids to secondary units in substations, Hitachi Energy technology helps increase the reliability and improve the operations of data centers while reducing life cycle cost and environmental impact.

Dry-type transformers are the ideal choice for modern data centers, offering a range of intrinsic advantages such as self-extinguishing propertieseco-friendly operation, and minimal maintenance requirements, guaranteeing a safe and continuous power supply while supporting data center operations with reliability and consistency.

Data centres are highly demanding applications that require specialised electrical characteristics. There are several critical factors to consider in order to meet the challenges of such complex power systems. Load characteristics—such as non-linear loads with high harmonic content—transient voltages caused by frequent switching, space constraintsnoise control, and the management of leakage currents are just a few of the essential aspects that must be addressed.
